Restoration work has got underway on the last stage of a multi-million pound scheme to preserve the future of the Tudor House attraction in Southampton, Hampshire.

Birmingham-based Linford Construction will carry out the work on the second phase of the project, which will take 18 months to complete and includes new visitor facilities, displays and exhibitions. A new lift will be installed to make the first floor of the historic property accessible to disabled visitors, while a new café will also be created as part of efforts to improve the attraction's visitor experience.

The restoration of the Grade I-listed Tudor House, which dates back to the late 15th century, has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (£3.5m) and Southampton City Council (SCC) (£1.8m). SCC cabinet member for leisure, culture and heritage, John Hannides, said: "Tudor House is one of Southampton's most important historical buildings. Phase Two is the final part of the extensive work that we have undertaken and it will transform the museum.

Once the work is complete, it will bring to life this remarkable house for people of all ages to explore and enjoy. This unique project underlines our continued commitment to showcasing Southampton`s very rich heritage." The scheme is expected to be completed in summer 2011.
