Football creditors net Portsmouth TV cash
Troubled Portsmouth Football Club (PFC) has been dealt a fresh financial blow after the Premier League announced that the club's share of television revenue would go towards unpaid creditors.
The decision was made following two days of discussions between the board of the Premier League over the distribution of broadcast fee payments due to be allocated to the competition's 20 clubs. A Premier League spokesperson said: "The board has decided, in accordance with Premier League rules, to pay those undisputed football creditors that were overdue at the time of meeting. This includes both domestic and overseas clubs."
Meanwhile, the Football Conference has confirmed that its 68 member clubs, which compete in the Blue Square Premier, North and South leagues, will receive a share of central funding earlier than expected. Officials said that the cash had been released ahead of schedule to help clubs deal with any cashflow problems that may have arisen after a large amount of games fell victim to the cold weather over the past few weeks.
Blue Square Premier side Wrexham Football Club (WFC) has been one of the clubs worst-affected by the wintery conditions, with its fixture against Stevenage Borough Football Club scheduled for 16 January becoming the club's eighth successive game to be postponed due to the weather. Football Conference chair Brian Lee said: "Any extra income from any source at this time can only be of benefit and while the clubs would have been getting another share from central funding shortly, it was deemed a sensible action for the board to take by releasing that element of funding now."
Meanwhile, Lewes Football Club (LFC), which competes in the Blue Square South competition, has announced that it has paid off its remaining debt to HM Revenue and Customs(HMRC), after meeting a demand for £48,000 to stave off a winding up petition. Redditch United Football Club (RUFC) of the Blue Square North league has also fended off a winding up order after reaching an "amicable solution" with one of the club's creditors.
