Free swimming for London’s kids
Up to 160,000 children in five London boroughs are expected to take advantage of a free swimming scheme this summer.
The Kids Swim Free scheme is taking place at local authority pools in Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest and offers children under the age of 16 free entry to the pools up until the end of August.
The initiative follows the success of a pilot scheme which was launched in the Easter holidays by London Mayor Ken Livingstone and parliamentary under secretary of state for schools, Stephen Twigg MP.
The aim is to increase the number of children swimming and to provide an opportunity to promote physical activity among children and their families.
The pilot saw a twofold increase in swims during the Easter holidays, with more than 75,000 entries compared with 32,000 the year before.
The impact was particularly impressive among children from deprived neighbourhoods and ethnic minority communities.
This Kids Swim Free programme is being funded by the Mayor of London; London Development Agency; Department for Education and Skills (DfES); Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS); London 2012 and the participating boroughs.
