Funding for historic Scottish properties
Abbotsford House in Melrose, southern Scotland, is set to receive £500,000 in order to undergo essential repairs as part of the latest round of funding announced by Historic Scotland.
The property, which is the former home of Sir Walter Scott, is one of four projects across the country to receive a share of nearly £1m from the Scottish Government's historic environment agency. Jacquie Wright, executive manager of the Abbotsford Trust, said: "We are currently working to raise the necessary funds to make Abbotsford a world-class visitor attraction and this Historic Scotland grant will enable us to make much-needed repairs that will help us in our quest to preserve the building, lands and contents for the nation."
Glasgow Art Club has been awarded £193,000 for improvements to the building, while £261,000 has been earmarked for the Royal Hospital Chapel at Gartnavel, Glasgow, to repair water damage and to reinstate it as a complementary therapy theatre alongside the hospital's cancer treatment facilities. Meanwhile, leaded windows at 45 North Bridge Street in Hawick, southern Scotland, will be repaired in a bid to retain the town's historic streetscape, following the award of a £12,854 grant.
