Funding provided for National Theatre of Scotland
The Scottish Executive has agreed a budget of £7.5m up to 2006 to allow the creation of a National Theatre of Scotland.
The new organisation – with a remit to "inspire and delight" and conceived as a ‘virtual’ body with only a small number of permanent staff – will be based in offices in Glasgow.
A chair, board of directors and a creative director have still to be appointed but it is anticipated that the first productions will be ready by early 2005 at the latest.
Scottish Arts Council chair, James Boyle, said he was delighted to welcome the announcement of the funding and applauded the vision of the Scottish Minister of Finance "in securing the future for this flagship organisation for all that is best and brightest in Scottish culture."
The funding is in addition to the £9m in 2003/04 that is directed to regional theatre through the Scottish Arts Council. Details: www.scotland.gov.uk
