Funding threat for Scottish snow centre
Midlothian Council has called for national support to safeguard the future of the Midlothian Snowsports Centre at Hillend, near Edinburgh, which is set to make a £529,000 loss for the current year.
The council, which is one of the smallest local authorities in Scotland, has launched a review of the facility due to its current operating deficit, amid a potential funding shortfall of more than £18m over the next three years. Midlothian Council has revealed that Midlothian Snowsports Centre costs £1.76m a year to operate, while more than £700,000 has been invested in recent years to maintain the facilities - including nearly £300,000 in new café facilities.
However, potential investment partners are being asked to come forward to ensure the facility is kept free from the threat of closure, with less than 20 per cent of users coming from the local area. Council leader Derek Milligan said: "We're in talks with Sportscotland and others looking at ways to keep this centre open and it would be premature to speculate on any closure at this stage."
Midlothian Council has also rejected criticism from the Green Party MSP, Robin Harper, over its management of the centre.
