Future of Herne Bay’s pier under consideration
Plans to rebuild Herne Bay pier in Kent and add a sea-life centre, casino and leisure complex have taken a step forward.
Kent County Council (KCC) has agreed to contribute up to £12,500 towards a joint feasibility study with Canterbury City Council (CCC) to help agree the future of the structure.
The possibility of introducing a new Sea-cat service from the pier to Essex and London is already under discussion, as is an end of the pier observatory ride enabling visitors to see up the Thames Estuary to London and across to France.
Other ideas include a monorail or other transport along the pier, a restaurant, a health spa and a multi-purpose leisure complex for sports, concerts, shows, fairs and exhibitions.
Alex King, KCC’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said he welcomed CCC’s invitation to join them "in examining the future for one of Herne Bay’s most special features". Details: www.kent.gov.uk
