Gateshead Council launches aerial assault course
An aerial assault course has opened at the Whickham Thorns Outdoor Centre in Dunston.
Called High Ropes, the course is owned and managed by Gateshead Council and stands 20m high.
High Ropes consists of six wooden poles sunk into the ground and spaced in a rectangular pattern, linked by a series of balance beams, wire walkways and Jacob’s ladder-style bridges.
Course sessions can be tailored to meet age requirements and individual levels of fitness.
The council hopes that High Ropes will be used by local businesses and community groups for team-building and personal development programmes.
Up to three groups of eight people can use the course at once with each group supervised by trained instructors. The course was built by the Adventure Rope Consultancy and joins other facilities at the Whickham Thorns Centre such as skiing, climbing and an assault course.
Cabinet member for culture at Gateshead Council, John McElroy, tried out the course at the launch. “We are always looking for new ways to build on and improve the services we offer local people, trying to offer them as many ways as possible to be active, build their confidence and skills gradually and enjoy the cultural opportunities on offer,” he said.
