Girl dies after tripping on slide mat
A seven-year-old girl has died at the Wonderland Pleasure Park in Farnsfield, Nottinghamshire, after tripping over and breaking her neck.
According to Nottinghamshire Police, the girl, Megan Wilcox of Broxtowe, Nottinghamshire, had just finished a ride on the park’s astroslide and picked her mat up.
It seems that she then proceeded to run towards the entrance to the slide with the mat when she tripped and landed on her head with her full body weight.
A Nottinghamshire Police spokesperson told Leisure Opportunities: “She had got to the bottom of the ride safely but, as she stood up to take her mat, she fell, resulting in serious internal injuries including a broken neck.
“We are not treating the death as suspicious, but would like to hear from anyone who visited the park that day and may have seen the accident.”
Wilcox was rushed to the Kings Mill hospital after the accident, which happened at around 1.15pm on 5 September, but was pronounced dead soon after arrival.
Sid Pepper, owner of Wonderland Pleasure Park, closed the park out of respect for the Wilcox family on Monday.
He said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and we now await the verdict on the actual cause of death.
“We consider it a tragic accident but, before the cause of death is determined, any speculation over the issues surrounding Megan’s fall are irrelevant.”
People who visited the park on 5 September at around 1.15 pm are asked to contact PC Sarah Smith at Nottinghamshire Police on +44 (0)1623 420 999 ex. 3376
