Give it a Go! gets Camden residents active
Jubilee Hall Clubs has hailed as a success a partnership with NHS Camden to create more opportunities for local residents to become active.
In March, NHS Camden launched Give it a Go!, a scheme which offered people on low incomes one month's free access to any of four leisure centres in the borough.
Anyone who attended more than once a week during that month then qualified for six months' free membership at the leisure centre of their choice.
Nearly 2,000 residents signed up to the scheme and more than 70 per cent went on to claim their free membership for the next six months.
Manager of the Armoury gym in Hampstead - which is operated by sports trust Jubilee Hall Clubs - Mukhtar Mukhtar, said: "The Give it a Go! scheme fits in well with the centre's community objectives which include after-school classes for obese children and a cardiac rehab programme.
"Making it free for people to use the gym has removed the barrier of the cost and over 75 per cent of people who initially signed up have qualified for the six month membership."
NHS Camden's head of public partnerships, Clare Wilson, added: "We are still analysing the success of the scheme and we will be monitoring people's progress over the next six months, but the indications are overwhelmingly positive.
"If we can remove the barriers to help people improve their lifestyle, and it produces demonstrable health benefits, then we are doing our job."
