Good Pub Guide warns of 'menu pollution'
A survey in the newly published Good Pub Guide has reported high levels of what is being labelled 'menu pollution' in pubs.
Many pubs, says the guide's introduction, are 'putting all their imagination and flights of fancy into the menu, instead of into the food itself'.
'Peppering their menus with trendy chef speak - coulis, jus, compote, viege, galette and so forth - they paint mouth-watering pictures of dishes that turn out to be very ordinary and lacklustre.'
The guide also claims that noise pollution from piped music is 'remorselessly on the increase', and has now reached 57 per cent of pubs - a rise of 5 per cent on last year.
The number of pubs with dartboards has dropped by 7 per cent.
Britain's most costly average pint, at £2.24, is to be found in London and Surrey. The cheapest pint, at £1.76 and £1.81, can be found in Lancashire and Cheshire respectively.
