The government and the London Olympics Organising Committee (LOCOG) have defended the budget for the 2012 Olympic Games, which will cost £2bn – £500m more than was stated in the bid documents.

LOCOG and the government have rejected claims from Liberal Democrat treasury spokesman, Vince Cable that there was "total chaos" at the heart of the project.

A spokesperson for LOCOG said that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had requested that all bids use 2004 prices, and that £2bn had always been the expected final cost.

The Westminster Hall debate, which was tabled by Cable, was to address the potential increase in council tax placed on Londoners.

The government said that the council tax would not be affected by the increase.
