Government funding secured for out of school clubs
The government has announced £1m will be invested in a new programme of after school clubs aiming to improve children’s basic sporting skills.
The clubs will focus on honing transferable core skills – such as spatial awareness, throwing, catching and balance – with a view to improving children’s overall athletic ability, rather than focus on sport-specific activities.
The scheme, which is being run in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust, will eventually see 800 multi-skill clubs across the country being run by schools involved in School Sports Partnerships (SSPs).
Multi-skill clubs and SSPs form part of the national Physical Education, School Sport and Club Links (PESSCL) strategy, which aims to increase the amount of high quality Physical Education and sport for school children – the government target is that 85 per cent of five to 16 year olds should participate in more than two hours of high quality PE and sport by 2008.
