Government reveals recipients of £15.3m of sports funding
The department of culture, media and sport (DCMS) has announced details of 45 projects which will receive a total of £15.3m of Big Lottery Funding.
The Kenton School in Newcastle will receive £1.7m for the construction of a new six-court sports complex with a gym, dance studio and fitness suite, while Sheldon Heath School in Yardley, Birmingham, will get £700,000 towards a new multi-use games area which will include rugby, hockey, cricket and tennis facilities.
Swadelands school in Lenham, near Maidstone, will use its £741,000 grant to build a new fitness centre and dance studio which will be used by the local community during the evenings.
Regions most benefiting from the latest announcement were the north east with £2.8m in funding for four projects, while the west midlands (10 projects) and the north west (five projects) each received more than £2m.
Sports minister Richard Caborn said: “Every one of these grants, whether large or small, has an important part to play in driving participation in sports and activity, to help achieve both a fitter nation and world class success. This lottery funding will make a big difference in all these communities.”
Neil Walker, Kenton School’s deputy head, said “Thanks to this grant, the pupils, staff and local community will at long last have the opportunity to access the facilities they deserve.
“With the current emphasis on developing healthy lifestyles I am sure that this grant will help to increase the number of participants in a whole range of sports and activities for years to come.”
The latest round of funding is part of the Big Lottery Fund’s £750m New Opportunities for PE and Sport Program launched in 2002, which has so far seen a total of £345m invested in school sports across England.
