Grant sets forest scheme in motion
A £700,000 grant from Sport England and the Big Lottery Fund has paved the way for the £1.4m redevelopment of Bedgebury Forest in Kent, south east England, to create an outdoor multi-activity centre.
The award, along with funding from the Forestry Commission and the Friends of Bedgebury Pinetum, will pay for a new building containing shops, cycle hire, showers, an information hub and a classroom as well as a network of walking, cycling and horseriding trails.
A freeride area for cyclists is also planned, which will incorporate structures and obstacles to test a rider’s ability.
Project director Terry Jennings said he also aims to create mountain biking trails which would meet Olympic standards. “We are currently in discussions with British Cycling and the International Mountain Bike Association to develop state of the art mountain bike trails that are suitable for trialling our athletes of the future,” he said.
The project will also see the development of a new all-ability path network in the Bedgebury National Pinetum attraction, which borders the 850-hectare forest.
The Forestry Commission is working with Toll Rides Off-road Trust and Henson Horse Centre to provide the dedicated horseriding routes along with maps, picnic areas and toilets.
Due for completion in April 2006, the new facilities and trails will be open all year round. Details: www.forestry.gov.uk/bedgebury
