Retired footballer and US architects join forces to propose national sports complex for Guyana

Miami design studio Baker Barrios Architects have unveiled their vision for a national football stadium and sports complex in Guyana, South America.

The proposed project – which has been developed by former Canadian international footballer Alex Bunbury, who was born in Guyana – is anchored by a 24,000-seat stadium which will host the nation’s home football fixtures.

Baker Barrios’ 230-acre masterplan for the scheme also includes an 80,000sq ft (7,400sq m) training facility and 10 training pitches, a sports academy; an 18-hole golf course; a 6,000 seat amphitheatre; retail and business centres; a community outreach and healthcare centre; and a five-star resort with 120 rooms.

“The masterplan creates a true destination and an exciting experience for visitors, spectators and athletes, while establishing a framework for sustainable legacy development,” said studio principal Tim Baker.

“This expansion project will provide a central hub for athletics while offering world-class amenities for fans and state-of-the-art resources and spaces for athletes to study, train and live.”

Bunbury, who retired as a player in 2000, has spoken about his desire to found an Alex Bunbury Sports and Academics Academy to improve sports and educational development in Guyana, which has a population of under 800,000, and the wider region.

The architects are finalising their design proposal, and the project will then be submitted to the government for approval.

In a recent address to the nation, Guyana’s president, David A. Granger, pledged to promote development, expand national infrastructure and extend public services "to achieve national unity."
