Hadrian’s Wall trail boosts visitors to the region
The Countryside Agency has released figures showing that walkers visiting the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail have contributed almost £4.5m to the region’s economy since it opened in May.
More than 400,000 people have used the trail, which was created following a £6m investment by the Countryside Agency – including a £3.14m lottery grant.
David McGlade, National Trails officer at the Countryside Agency, said: “The initial £6m investment in the new Trail has already generated £4.5m of expenditure. Remoter and small businesses have seen a significant rise in visitor numbers and expenditure so the Trail is playing a very strong part in the economic vitality of the region as a whole.”
Of the trail walkers, 82 per cent came from within the UK, 5 per cent for the US, 4 per cent from The Netherlands, 3 per cent from Canada and the remaining 6 per cent from other counties.
Hotel and accommodation figures have also showed that visitors are staying longer in the area.
