Holmes Place to be sentenced in May
Holmes Place Health Clubs will be sentenced on 14 May for its part in the death of a 32-year-old female customer at its City of London club in March 2003.
The company, which was acquired by Virgin Active in 2006, admitted breaching health and safety laws at a hearing at Southwark Crown Court in December 2009, but sentencing had been delayed as legal proceedings were also underway against lift manufacturer ThyssenKrupp Elevator UK.
The 32-year-old was crushed to death at the Holmes Place club after being trapped between a faulty lift and the wall of the lift shaft.
Holmes Place pleaded guilty to three charges relating to the operations of a faulty lift, while ThyssenKrupp admitted guilt to the charge of failing to ensure people not in its employment were not exposed to safety risks.
Both companies now face paying large sums for damages to the family of the 32-year-old.
