Hoteliers fear bed tax will put tourists off UK
The vast majority of hoteliers fear that the proposed bed tax would hit the UK’s tourist trade and a quarter believe that it could affect their expansion plans, according to a recent survey.
The research, carried out by accountancy firm UHY Hacker Young, found that 88 per cent of hoteliers – including groups such as InterContinental, Hilton and Marriott – thought that the tax would reinforce the global perception of the UK as a high cost destination.
David Guest, of UHY’s hotel and restaurant group, said: “A bed tax could have a major impact on the tourism industry and would significantly increase the bill for a week’s holiday within the UK.
“The country already has a reputation as a high cost destination and is struggling with a tourism deficit. This is the last thing the industry needs.”
The bed tax was proposed in Sir Michael Lyons’ interim report on local government funding last year.
