IMAX development takes step forward
Bournemouth Borough Council (BBC) has approved recommendations to draw up a planning brief for the redevelopment of the town's IMAX site.
The council's cabinet backed proposals to take the scheme forward on 28 April, after it was revealed that four out of the seven options put forward for the waterfront site had received the "overall support" of local residents in a council survey. Tropical gardens; a water park; an interactive arts, museum and entertainment scheme; and a performing arts space are among ideas backed in the council survey.
More than 3,500 people took part in the council research. Plans for a spa; boutiques and bistros; or a family play park did not receive much support as standalone plans. BBC leader Stephen MacLoughlin said: "The council bought the head-lease of the building, but we aren't able to subsidise any attractions in its replacement. It's likely, therefore, that any developer will need to include some more profitable facilities.
"The public said that interactive arts and performing space continue to be popular options and it is right that the planning brief reflects that." Demoliton work is not expected to start on site until summer 2011, although the planning brief will enable the council to move forward with the appointment of an architect.
