Inclusive NI canoe trails planned
The Canoe Association of Northern Ireland (CANI) and the Countryside Access and Activities Network (CAAN) are planning to develop a series of canoe trails in Northern Ireland.
The first canoe trail will be launched in September within Fermanagh’s Lough Erne system and will utilise the natural resources offered by the 60-mile stretch of water that comprises Upper and Lower Lough Erne.
The trails will be open to all and both CAAN and CANI have also agreed to work with Disability Sports NI so that the Lough Erne Canoe Trail is fully inclusive for people with disabilities.
The trails will be able to adapt to both amateur and experienced canoeists alike while there will also be many stop-off points along the trails, providing accommodation, boat hire, food and storage facilities.
According to canoe development officer, Matt Peach, who will be responsible for implementing the canoe trails projects, there are currently 19 canoe clubs in Northern Ireland that are affiliated to the Canoe Association of Northern Ireland. Between them, these clubs account for around 400 affiliated members while he believes the untapped potential for growing adventure tourism within Northern Ireland is huge. Details: [email protected]
