Indian tourism minister confident of continued growth
The Indian minister for tourism and culture has said that India is the fastest growing global tourism destination and that the country is dedicated to maintaining that momentum, particularly in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010.
Speaking to tour operators and travel agents in Sydney, Australia, last week, Smt Ambika Soni said that “shortcomings were being attended to in order to facilitate visitors” and that the main goal is to “make tourism affordable and accessible to all categories of travellers”.
The country is currently addressing flight bottlenecks, infrastructure and road and rail network difficulties the minister said, adding that a number of new hotel projects are in the pipeline as India Tourism aims to have an additional 100,000 hotel rooms in the country in time for the Games.
Smt Ambika Soni also said that in the last three years tourism arrivals from Australia had almost doubled to 100,000 – making India the fastest growing destination in the Australian market. She added that the target is to double this again in the next three years.
Tourism India hopes to achieve US$10bn (£5.7bn, 8.3bn euro) earnings from tourism by the end of 2008.
