Inquiry for Belfast airport runway plans
Northern Ireland's planning appeals commission (PAC) is to hold a public inquiry in order to examine George Best Belfast City Airport's (GBBCA) plans to extend its runway.
The airport's proposals, which include a 590m (1,936ft) extension at the north east end of the runway and a 120m (394ft) retraction at the south west end, will now go before the commission. Associated landing lights and ancillary works also form part of the GBBCA scheme, which has seen nearly 1,500 letters and eight petitions containing 499 signatures submitted in opposition. However, there have also been 2,241 letters of support.
Environment minister Edwin Poots said: "The application raises matters that may not be resolved through the normal planning process and will remain at issue. A public inquiry will provide a forum for the presentation and consideration of these issues."
