IoM seeks UK electronic border inclusion
A series of measures designed to enable the Isle of Man (IoM) to be included within the UK's new electronic border security system have been proposed by the island's government.
The move aims to allow island residents to travel to and from the UK without having to be subjected to screening under the new e-border system, which has been created to improve national security. According to the IoM government, the island's exclusion would force travellers to provide advance information derived from passports or ID cards to air and see carriers as part of the e-border scheme.
However, the administration has taken steps to extend the Island of the Immigration (Isle of Man) (Amendment) Order 2010, while a new Memorandum of Understanding between the IoM and the UK will be sought over the sharing of relevant information. IoM chief minister Tony Brown said: "Given that the British government is continuing to strengthen its electronic border around the United Kingdom, the main question for the Isle of Man is whether we should be on the inside or the outside of the e-border.
"The Isle of Man government's view is that to maintain current travel arrangements between the Island and the UK, we need to be on the inside of the e-border and should take the necessary steps to allow that to happen."
