Isle of Man £40m redevelopment needs £1m nudge
Plans for a £40m plus redevelopment of the Summerland site on the Isle of Man by private developer, Henry Boot, have reached a critical stage.
The scheme needs to gain approval from the Department of Tourism and Leisure (DT&L) to spend an extra £1m before it can be taken forward to the contract stage.
The extra spend would cover the legal and professional consultancy plus the design and technical fees needed to take to project to the next level.
The Summerland site redevelopment includes a 100-bedroom hotel, a dual-use ice rink and five-a-side football facility alongside retail units, bars, cafes and residential apartments.
The DT&L is hoping that the redevelopment will increase tourism revenue while providing new leisure facilities for the island.
Providing the extra £1m spend is approved, the Summerland site has a provisional completion date of 2007.
DT&L minister David Cretney said: “It’s a very exciting development which aims to provide new tourism and leisure facilities for the Isle of Man, but first we need to ensure support for the proposals.
“The vast majority of the £40m funding for redevelopment of the site will come from private companies. It’s vital with such large sums involved that the scheme is endorsed by Tynwald before more money is spent.” Details: www.gov.im/tourism
