JD Wetherspoon bows to pressure for Premiership tv
The JD Wetherspoon pub group has installed television screens in six of its 640 pubs in the UK for the beginning of the Premiership.
Ignoring its own philosophy of a tv-free pub environment throughout the chain, Wetherspoon has bowed to a combination of the new football season and repeated requests from pub managers for tv screens.
The six pubs to have tv screens will have the sound muted, however. They are also all in pubs which operate two bars, where customers can avoid the screen if they have no interest in the proceedings.
If the initial test is successful, screens may be introduced in more pubs within the chain. The group will continue to turn the sound off on all its AWP fruit machines within its sites and there are currently no plans to play music in any of the sites.
A spokesperson for Wetherspoon said: “We are just testing the water to see if there’s a consumer demand for televisions. If there is a demand, then we’ll probably keep them and extend the idea.”
