Jake’s reopens after Hurricane Ivan sweeps through
Caribbean beach resort Jake’s has reopened following post-hurricane Ivan repairs – defying media reports which claimed the property was to remain closed indefinitely.
“We had some downed trees and some lost roofs,” said owner Jason Henzell. “Looking at the damage I would have to say we were blessed!”
Henzell has also used the time that the Treasure Beach resort was closed to expand and improve the property.
“As a hotel that is inspired by the environment we are looking at Ivan’s passing as an opportunity to refine the Jake’s experience for the comfort of our guests,” he said.
Improvements have included a new standby generator to maintain power to all rooms, restaurants and common areas in emergencies; an extended pool deck to provide more outside dining and new landscaping.
“I think the damage was exaggerated because of fear,” said Henzell. “A lot of people have a deep emotional connection to Jake’s and so they feared the worst. Although this might have cost us some bookings, over 1,000 guests have emailed us with offers of assistance.”
The resort re-opened on 15 October.
