January opening for new Telford facility
Telford and Wrekin Council (TWC) has revealed that the new Abraham Darby Sports and Leisure Centre, part of the Abraham Darby Learning Community, will open in January.
The new facility will open along with the Woodlands Primary School, with the handover of the buildings from contractor Kier to the local authority to take place on 9 December.
Leisure facilities will be available to the public from 9 January, which are to comprise a 25m, five-lane swimming pool with moveable floor and a 70-station fitness suite.
An activity studio, a sports hall, and outdoor tennis courts will also form part of the venue, in addition to grass pitches built to Sport England specifications.
The new facilities replace those currently on offer at the Madeley Sports Centre, which is set to close on 18 December to allow staff to transfer to the new premises.
TWC cabinet member for leisure and wellbeing Arnold England said: "These wonderful new facilities will not only benefit existing customers but will open up opportunities for the whole community to become more active."
