Japan withdraws 2018 World Cup bid
Japan - one of England's rivals to host the 2018 World Cup - has withdrawn its bid in order to focus on securing the right to stage the 2022 event.
According to the BBC, the Japanese Football Association (JFA) has suggested that FIFA are looking to hold the 2018 tournament in Europe, with a number of countries in the running. FIFA will decide which country will host both the 2018 and the 2022 World Cups in December, with Australia, the US, Russia, Spain/Portugal, Belgium/Netherlands and England looking to host either of the events.
Japan will now focus on the 2022 event along with Qatar and South Korea, while Mexico has already pulled out of the race to host either tournament. Indonesia's bid was rejected. The BBC quoted JFA president Motoaki Inukai as saying: "We were told European countries would be in a fierce tussle for 2018 and that aiming for 2022 would the best choice."
