Jubilee Hall Trust wins Parliamentary gym contract
Jubilee Hall Trust has won the contract to manage the Westminster Gym in the Houses of Parliament for a further three years.
This follows a lengthy competitive tendering process which started last autumn, and is the culmination of a lot of hard work put in by the Westminster Gym staff and the Trust's bidding team.
The gym - which is in the basement of 1 Canon Row, just across the road from the House but within the Parliamentary Estate - includes a gym floor filled with Star Trac equipment, a Spinning zone and the Betty Boothroyd Studio (named after the former Speaker and one-time professional dancer).
The changing rooms are comfortably appointed and feature saunas whilst there is also a steam room, but no pool.
On the Parliamentary Estate, many of the bars and restaurants are only open to specific groups, such as MP's or Peers or Press, but the Westminster Gym is open to all 4,000 pass-holders, which means that on a typical day, the gym could include a Cabinet minister and a Member of the House of Lords training alongside catering, cleaning and security staff.
The gym has been in its present home since 1999 and the Jubilee Hall Trust has managed it since then, after successfully winning the original management contract.
Jubilee Hall Trust Chief Executive, Phil Rumbelow, said: 'When we first won the contract over 10 years ago, we were surprised but delighted, and, if I am honest, a little bit daunted at the prospect, especially as I was appointed as the first Club Manager!
"But, over that time, we have doubled gym membership and, in a recent survey, 95 per cent of members said that they would recommend us to a friend. Our continued success is a testament to the excellent service our team has provided, as well as our passion for innovation"
'Examples of innovation have included the introduction of two Expresso virtual reality bikes (among the first in the UK) and the recent addition of a Balancemaster trainer to help injured clients with rehabilitation.
The Trust works closely with the Houses' own Occupational Health Service, delivering a successful medical referral scheme, as well as offering specialist training such as back care programmes, and delivering outreach relaxation classes across all areas of the Parliamentary Estate.
