Just what the Doctor ordered
When he’s not fighting Daleks and Cybermen, Doctor Who has an interesting sideline: as a sales rep for Welsh tourism.
Since the BBC’s decision to film the latest version of the popular sci-fi series in Wales, tourism in Cardiff and Swansea has received a welcome boost.
Thousands of fans have reportedly swarmed the area to visit the various locations featured in the hit series.
Geoff Haden, chair of Tourism Swansea, said that he aims to target the ‘Doctor Who nuts’, with plans to distribute leaflets and launch a website featuring a guide to places where episodes – and other TV programmes and movies – were filmed, before summer this year.
Haden said he picked up the idea for the leaflet when he saw a similar project in Cornwall.
Doctor Who was filmed at locations such as Rhossili Bay and Cardiff’s Millennium Centre.
Other projects filmed in the area, which will be highlighted in the guide, include the movies Twin Town starring Rhys Ifans and Only Two Can Play starring the late Peter Sellers.
In February, a Doctor Who exhibition at the Red Dragon Centre in Cardiff Bay received its 100,000th visitor, who was presented with his own miniature model Dalek.
