Kelvin Hall revamp plans move forward

Councillors have resolved to move forward with plans for the first phase of a major £24.5m redevelopment of the A-listed Kelvin Hall International Sports Arena in Glasgow.

Members of Glasgow City Council (GCC) have approved a report into the historic venue's future, with a design team now to be appointed in order to draw up outline proposals.

Kelvin Hall had housed the Museum of Transport before it moved to the Riverside Museum last year, while sports events are relocating to venues such as the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

The first phase of the building's redevelopment is to include the creation of a Glasgow Club and community sports centre, which will meet demand for indoor sports hall space.

A shared museums collection facility will also be housed at Kelvin Hall, which will cater for 1.5 million items from Glasgow's civic collections - The Hunterian.

GCC and operator Glasgow Life is working with the University of Glasgow on the scheme, which already has initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

"Plans for the Kelvin Hall's redevelopment as a world-class sporting and cultural venue will reinforce its status as one of our city's most loved buildings," said a GCC spokesperson.
