Kirkcudbright Art Gallery on hold
Plans to build a new £10m Kirkcudbright Art Gallery in southern Scotland may be scrapped following news that the council's stage one Heritage Lottery Fund bid for £4m has been unsuccessful.
The gallery was to be located at the town's Johnston Primary School, following the school's relocation to a new building in 2010. It was to provide temporary gallery space for a changing exhibition programme and educational and research facilities.
Funding was also expected to come from Dumfries and Galloway Council's (DGC) capital programme, worth £1m, as well as £2m from the Lowland and Uplands Scotland Regional Development Fund. Private donations, sponsorship and fundraising would have contributed the remaining £2m.
The project board will meet on 18 May to consider how best to proceed, resulting in a future decisive meeting with the corporate policy committee.
Meanwhile, council plans to spend £1.6m on refurbishing Dumfries Ice Bowl remain in progress. A final decision on whether to allocate the full £2.5m required for the upgrade will be made by the resources committee in June.
