LDA calls for designs for aquatic centre
The London Development Agency has launched a competition to design the aquatics centre which would host Olympic swimming events if the London 2012 bid is successful.
The facility, set to be built on a disused site in the Lower Lea Valley, east London, will be built regardless of the success of the Olympic and Paralympic bid, however, and is expected to be in operation well before 2012.
Competition is expected to be fierce with a considerable number of national and international designers and architects likely to submit proposals for the centre.
The brief states the complex must meet Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) technical requirements so it would be able to host the Olympic Games and future swimming competitions, but also meet the needs of local communities.
While the LDA expects to see a variety of innovative designs submitted, it stated all entries will be judged on how practical they are to build and whether they can be delivered to budget.
Lord Coe, chair of London 2012, said: “The aquatics centre is a key part of our plans and the innovative design will provide a state of the art Olympic venue and a world class training facility for our elite swimmers.
“It will also serve as a lasting legacy for the local communities and enable people of all ages and abilities to achieve new levels of heath and fitness.”
Roger Draper, chief executive of Sport England, added: “We look forward to bringing our expertise from the success of the Manchester Aquatics Centre built for the Commonwealth Games and the legacy that has produced. A new aquatic centre in London would add substantially to the capital’s sporting offering, both for the Olympics and beyond.
The LDA has already secured the site for the complex and demolition work is scheduled to begin this summer.
