Lack of snow forces Olympic venue closure
Unseasonably warm and wet weather in Vancouver, Canada, has caused the 2010 Winter Olympic snowboard and freestyle skiing courses at Cypress Mountain to be shut in a bid to preserve snow.
The Vancouver Organising Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) and Cypress Mountain officials have shut the venue's alpine runs to the public two-and-a-half weeks ahead of schedule due to the weather conditions. VANOC's vice president of sport, Tim Gayda, said: "Closing Cypress Mountain early is the responsible thing to do, given the recent weather, in order to make sure we're ready to host the world's best athletes in one month's time."
The facilities, which will be used to stage competitions in aerials, moguls, parallel giant slalom, halfpipe, and ski cross at the 2010 Games next month, will reopen to the public on 9 March. Meanwhile, the Cairngorm Mountain ski resort in Scotland has been forced to close due to too much snow at the venue. According to resort bosses, the decision to shut the site will allow excess snow to be cleared from approach roads and ski slopes.
