Lancashire pier on fire
The derelict Fleetwood Pier in Lancashire is ablaze and fire crews have been tackling the incident since they were called to the scene 0430 this morning.
The incident has required 10 fire engines, 60 - 70 fire fighters and two Aerial Ladder Platforms to get the majority under control, but the end of the pier is still ablaze and the buildings have been completely destroyed.
It is suspected that the fire started at the front of the pier near the pub/caféteria where it is continuing to flare up. Water is being pumped from both the sea as well as a nearby boating lake.
This is the second fire the pier has encountered in its lifetime. The first was in 1952, which started in the cinema, but resulted in the site being rebuilt within 12 months.
The 492 ft (150m) pier, originally built in 1910, has frequently changed hands in attempts to regenerate the pier. The present owner, businessman Mike Simmons, otherwise known as comedian Joey Blower, bought the site last year and planned to convert it into luxury apartments, but has encountered opposition from local residents.
The pier has been closed for a year but was only recently boarded up.
