Land secured for West Yorkshire sports scheme
Plans for new sports facilities in Skelmanthorpe, West Yorkshire, have taken a step forward after the council agreed to transfer 22.76 acres (9.21 hectares) to the trust spearheading the scheme.
Parkgate Sports and Community Trust intends to use the land off Baildon Way to develop sports pitches and a community facility, with Kirklees Council set to continue negotiations over a possible long-term lease. Trust chair Christopher Ward told the Huddersfield Daily Examiner: "We're now going to incorporate two rugby pitches, an FA-standard soccer pitch and two training pitches.
"It just needs to go through the planning system now, but that's being done as a matter of priority. We have costed the whole project and it's gone up quite dramatically to about £6.5m." According to the newspaper, the scheme will also include an outdoor climbing wall and an environmental centre.
