Late night closing on London’s tube?
The publishers of a free weekly email newsletter about all things to do with the capital – London By London – have set up an online petition to campaign for the city’s Underground system to stay open later on Friday and Saturday nights.
The organisers of the appeal state that whilst many of the city’s clubs and bars stay open until 3am at the weekend, the Underground shuts down just after midnight resulting in "millions of us either having to go home early or face the prospect of a tortuously slow journey on a night bus or paying a fortune for a cab".
It is estimated that 100,000 signatures on the petition "should make both the mayor and Transport for London (TfL) sit up and take notice". The closing date is 1 September or 100,000 signatures, whichever comes first.
As of 16 June the petition had almost 40,000 names on it.
TfL, the body which operates the Underground, has in the past cited hugely increased costs and the need to close tunnels daily for maintenance work as the main reasons why it can’t run a 24/7 service, although it has acknowledged that the tube’s operating hours need to be updated.
London By London considers a 3am closedown is late enough for most bar and club goers to get home but early enough to permit essential maintenance to take place. Details: www.londonbylondon.co.uk / www.londontransport.co.uk
