Architects envision €30m Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art

Designs by a number of architects competing to design a €30m (US$34m, £23.6m) contemporary art museum in Latvia have been unveiled.

The seven teams – shortlisted from an invited list of 25 global architecture firms and each paired with a local design team – include Adjaye Associates and AB3D; Caruso St John Architects and Arhitektu birojs Jaunromans un Abel; Henning Larsen Architects and MARK arhitekti; Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects and MADE arhitekti; Neutelings Riedijk Architects and Brigita Bula arhitekte; Sauerbruch Hutton and Arhitekts Ingurds Lazdinš; and wHY, OUTOFBOX Architecture and ALPS.

The Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art will sit at the heart of the Latvian capital of Riga, with plans to become the “most-visited art museum in the Baltic states”, according to project funders the Boris and Inara Teterev Foundation and the ABLV Charitable Foundation.

The shortlisted architects presented their proposals to the competition jury, which is chaired by David Bickle of the V&A, with a decision to be made by the end of the month and the Gallery to open in November 2021.

“We are delighted to publish these submissions,” said competition director Malcolm Reading. “The teams have created a vivid and intense set of design proposals illustrating the potential for this building to become a modern landmark for Riga. The teams of international and local partners have produced work of the highest quality and, today, the jury begins its work to determine a winner.”
