Leasowe leisure centre safe
Leasowe Recreation Centre in Merseyside will not close after Wirral Borough Council's new cabinet pledged its support.
According to the Wirral Globe, the centre had been earmarked for community management by Arena Housing Group under plans which also included closing 11 of Wirral's libraries. But during a meeting of Wirral's cabinet it emerged that Leasowe Community Homes - a subsidiary organisation of Arena Housing - was unlikely to be able to take over the centre's running as originally proposed.
As a result, it was recommended that the council's financial support for the centre will continue.
Ian Lewis, cabinet member for customer and community engagement, told the Globe: "This is the right decision for Leasowe. As Arena Housing have decided they are unwilling to take on the running of the centre, it was important that the new cabinet moved quickly to end any uncertainty in the community.
"The recreation centre has received substantial investment over the years, not least in the fantastic new gym. It's a tribute to the people in the Leasowe community and wider area that they have continued to lobby to keep the centre open.
The centre, which opened in 1976, boasts a leisure and training pool, a learner pool, a fitness suite, a junior gym, squash courts and a multi-purpose sports hall, as well as outdoor football pitches.
