Leicestershire leisure centre to close
Melton Leisure Centre in Leicestershire is to close after its owners, Brooksby Melton College, said it had become too expensive to run.
The indoor sports centre and squash court has been open for more than 20 years, but the college said it would lose £100,000 a year if it stays open and, consequently, it will shut its doors on 31 July.
However, according to the Leicester Mercury, Alan Pearson, the chairman of Active Melton, which works to encourage residents to take up sport, is launching a campaign to keep the centre running.
He said: "This is a complete disaster. If Melton Leisure Centre closes, a town of 50,000 will be left with no facilities and nowhere to play all the sports that go on there now. It will leave a lot of clubs without an alternative."
Mr Pearson said he would lobby Melton MP Alan Duncan to try to get the college to change its mind.
