Lighter Evenings, Longer Days?
Greenwich Mean Time, unique in Western Europe, currently shuts down parks and sports grounds one hour early for 11 months of the year in the South of England, and for nine months in the North due to darkness.
An idea has been brought forward where extra afternoon light created by putting the clocks forward one hour to Single/Double Summer time would make far better use of our existing outdoor facilities and open spaces.
The theory behind the idea will not only help sports and open spaces but benefit many other people. Road traffic accidents will take a dramatic decline as most happen during dark hours along with other crime related incidents.
The problems of obesity and lack of exercise are an increasing concern in the media and the extra hour that people could spend outdoors would cost nothing to change but could leave behind a lasting legacy.
We would like to know your opinion on this matter. If you believe that this is a good idea or have any general comments about this idea please email us at [email protected].
