Liverpool council unveils new vision
A new 15-year strategy has been launched by Liverpool City Council (LCC) in a bid to improve the health and wellbeing of residents through the reduction of obesity levels and ensuring people live longer.
Liverpool 2024: a thriving international city sets out a series of plans designed to address a variety of public health issues, while also attempting to make the city one of the greenest and cleanest in Britain. The city's local strategic partnership, Liverpool First, is implementing the plans following a 17-month consultation with more than 1,500 residents and more than 50 partner organisations.
Among LCC's pledges as part of the 100-page document, the council will look to reduce the level of obesity in adults and children from 2010 onwards, while also reducing the number of smokers to less than 10 per cent of the population. A 35 per cent reduction in carbon emissions is also being targeted, which will be brought about through increased use of public transport and walking and cycling routes.
LCC leader Warren Bradley said: "Liverpool has achieved a tremendous amount over the past decade. The city has been completely transformed, but we still have to reverse more than 60 years of decline.
"Too many of our people are without the skills necessary to get a job, and we have massive challenges to overcome in regard to poor health. This vision is a road map which will help us restore Liverpool to its rightful place as a thriving international city and will allow us to improve life for everyone who lives and works in the city."
