London boroughs invited to revamp public spaces
London mayor Boris Johnson has called upon the London's 32 borough councils to submit their proposals for the refurbishment of the capital's public spaces as part of the Great Spaces scheme.
Unveiled in March, the Great Spaces initiative aims to make London a more attractive place to live and work by transforming public spaces that currently offer poor access or that are unwelcoming and unattractive. The leaders of all London boroughs have now been invited to submit plans for schemes in their local area that could benefit from a share of £200,000 funding, specialist advice from the London Development Agency and the mayor's 'Great Space' accreditation.
Johnson said: "High quality public space can improve safety, benefit the local economy, encourage future growth and opportunities, and create a sense of wellbeing and pride within the local neighbourhood."
