London hotels
Central London hotels have been deemed "unfit" to host guests during the 2012 Olympics by civic campaign group London Citizens and trade union Unite.
The report, titled Rooms for Change: Putting London hotels on track for the Olympics refers to working conditions at London hotels as "Dickensian"; offering low wages, migrant labour and poor value for money. The report attributes the problem to the treatment of workers and the management’s reliance on a "transitory, migrant labour force that is hired and fired and will."
The report argues that key to making the hotels fit for 2012 is adopting the £7.45 London Living Wage as minimum wage and by investing in training. The report also outlined a set of minimum terms and conditions for workers if the agreement was to be signed, including providing unions access to meet hotel employees, improved training for all levels of staff and for hotels to facilitate attempts by workers to improve their English skills.
