London’s 2012 aquatics centre revealed
Details of the £70m Olympic aquatics centre for London’s 2012 games have been revealed.
The complex, designed by Zaha Hadid, will include two 50m pools and a competition diving pool. Each pool will be surrounded by its own spectator arena and in total the complex will have a seating capacity of around 20,000.
Lord Carter of Coles, chair of Sport England, said: “we have chosen a design which will not only create a modern environment for Olympic swimmers but will also provide a lasting legacy for swimming in London.”
“The centre will offer facilities for use by elite swimmers, local clubs, universities, schools and most importantly, the local community.”
The centre, which will be built even if London’s bid for 2012 is not successful, can be converted into a more community-friendly space by removing the 20,000 seats. It will also boast extensive health and fitness areas to contribute to the long-term viability of the centre.
Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said: “A London Olympic Games 2012 would transform the Lower Lea Valley and create a lasting legacy of cutting edge sporting venues for the capital and the nation.”
