Lottery boost for Hitchin museum scheme
Plans to create a new museum for North Hertfordshire at Hitchin Town Hall have received a "huge boost" after securing a first round pass from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
The decision, which includes £123,400 worth of development funding, will now allow North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) to move to the next stage of the application process.
Under the scheme, museums at Hitchin and Letchworth will be combined into one accessible site at Hitchin Town Hall Community Facility and North Herts Museum complex.
NHDC will finance the remainder of the £4.23m scheme, which will lead to improved access to the museum; updated displays; and learning and activity spaces for schools and groups.
The initial HLF funding award will go towards appointing a designer who will be responsible for ensuring the museum is fit-for-purpose, as well as an Audience Development Officer.
