M&B calls for smoking ban in all public areas
UK pub operator Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) has asked the government to introduce a complete ban on smoking in public places in England and Wales instead of the existing White Paper proposals, which would allow a food-based exemption route for pubs and bars.
According to The Guardian newspaper, M&B has said that the White Paper proposals on smoking – that would exempt pubs which do not serve food – are unworkable in their current form and a complete ban would be preferable.
M&B told the Department of Health: "The food-based exemption route is unworkable, divisive, creates a confusing and inequitable playing field and does nothing to address the public health concerns for staff."
Prior to the announcement, M&B had proposed the reintroduction of the saloon and public bar divide – which would offer smoking and non-smoking areas. Details: www.mitchellsandbutlers.co.uk
