Manchester encourages greener events industry
Manchester City Council has published a Green City Guide for hotels, event organisers and venues.
Key themes for hosting a sustainable event include picking the most appropriate conference location and considering the most sustainable transport options as well as limiting the environmental impact of printed materials and managing carbon emissions.
The guide also advises on dealing with waste management and using locally sourced and fairly traded foods.
Council leader Sir Richard Leese said: “Manchester is one of the top 50 worldwide venues for conferences and is a very important industry for the city. We are aware that there is a considerable environmental impact associated with the conference and event industry, which is why we want to support this sector in becoming more sustainable and this guide, gives practical advice and steps on how to do that.”
Richard Morrell, general manager of Palace Hotel, Manchester, said: “Our hotel is committed to becoming more sustainable. We rigorously promote energy conversation, with targets for savings across the hotel; we encourage the use of tap rather than bottled water and encourage our guests to use public transport.” Details: www.manchester.gov.uk
