Marrakech hotel reopens with new rooms and spa
The Dar Les Cigognes hotel in Marrakech, Morrocco has reopened following an extension which has more than doubled its capacity.
Originally opened in December 2001, the hotel, owned by Eben Lenderking and Tanja Tibaldi, offered just five bedrooms and a restaurant in a traditional Arab townhouse.
Following the completion of the second phase of construction, the property now boasts 11 rooms – three superior rooms, seven deluxe rooms and one suite – a hammam, spa and boutique shop after expanding into a neighbouring courtyard house.
The expansion was designed by architect Charles Boccara, with the interiors by Tibaldi.
Each of the rooms has been individually themed, with names including Sahara Room, Safari Room, Zouak Room (a decorative painting technique), Orientalist Suite and Middle Atlas Room.
The property is furnished throughout with locally sourced carpets, tapestries, furniture and decorative details including ornately carved wooden doors, brass ceiling lamps and hammered silver mirrors and basins.
The five bedrooms in the original townhouse are set around an inner courtyard, where huge columns lead up to the roof beams, and stucco arches leading to the kitchen, lounge, dining room and library.
The hotel name means ‘House of Storks’ after the birds which perch on the ramparts of the Royal Palace of Hassan II directly opposite the property. Details: www.lescigognes.com
